Change Default RDP Port Number in Registry

You may encounter a problem when trying to connect to your remote pc at the office or at home through a particular port number set up on your router. The default port number, 3389, is what is assigned on your pc to have open to allow remote connections.

Now, unless you can configure on your router a public port to forward to a private port, then we need to make a change in the registry. I’ve seen most new SMC routers allow you to open a public port of let’s say 1020, to forward to a private port number of 3389. So you will then use your external IP address along with the private port 1020, (eg. 70.234.12.3:1020) and allow connection to your pc at home or office. This of course would have to be configured on the router, to which ip on the private network you will allow remote connection.

Now to the registry change:

Go to start, and select run, and type: regedit - hit enter

Locate the following string: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal.

Type the new port number, and then click OK.

Quit Registry Editor.

And that’s it…. nice!

Spell Checker for Internet Explorer

I received today what I thought was an odd request. To install a spell checker on the toolbar of IE7, (Internet Explorer). At first I thought the request didn’t make any sense…. but duh! Wouldn’t I need a spell checker myself if I had a BLOG.

So I searched for one using the trusty Google engine. I found several…. first one I tried I seemed impressed with because of all it’s bells and whistles offered. But it lacked one thing… a stupid icon on the toolbar for SPELLCHECKING.

I uninstalled the last version and continued down the list… Found it:  ieSpell

I installed it and immediately saw what I needed. The icon on the toolbar. It’s an old plug-in but works on most versions of Internet Explorer, even the latest.

Try it, you’ll like it.

Lesson learned here…. don’t always trust the first link in Google will always answer your questions or problems.

To celebrate the first day of Spring, Rita’s Water Ice franchise will be holding it’s 16th annual First Day of Spring Italian Ice giveaway. Don’t know if there is one where you live, but these are great. They have bits of fruit in them and taste very natural.

I know this has nothing to do with tech support, but I wanted to share it with all. Cause’ I know I’m getting one.

What in the World is VoIP?

VoIP, or also known as broadband phone service, internet phone service, ip phone, voip service, is not at all too complicated.

VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol or as commonly stated Voice over IP. Internet Protocol (IP) is the method by which data is sent over the Internet (from computer to computer for example). So, basically, VoIP is the transmission of your voice over an internet connection.

It uses your internet connection to transmit your voice (analog) over the internet (digital), your voice signal must first be converted into a digital signal that the Internet Protocol (your internet connection) understands. This digital signal of your voice then travels over the internet and is directed to the number you are calling. At the other end, the digital signal is converted back to an analog signal (your voice) so the person you are calling can hear you. The conversion at the other end allows you to speak to anyone with a regular phone number, whether they have VoIP service or regular phone service.

Most plans provided by VoIP Service Providers now allow the user to call any number anywhere in the world, including local numbers, long distance numbers, international numbers, and cell numbers. However, this may depend on the Provider and the VoIP Plan you choose. One such VoIP providers, ViaTalk, offers more than what is needed to suit your needs.

The following link will take you to their calling plans. With a starting price of just $9.95, they’re hard to beat.
