You may encounter a problem when trying to connect to your remote pc at the office or at home through a particular port number set up on your router. The default port number, 3389, is what is assigned on your pc to have open to allow remote connections.

Now, unless you can configure on your router a public port to forward to a private port, then we need to make a change in the registry. I’ve seen most new SMC routers allow you to open a public port of let’s say 1020, to forward to a private port number of 3389. So you will then use your external IP address along with the private port 1020, (eg. 70.234.12.3:1020) and allow connection to your pc at home or office. This of course would have to be configured on the router, to which ip on the private network you will allow remote connection.

Now to the registry change:

Go to start, and select run, and type: regedit - hit enter

Locate the following string: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal.

Type the new port number, and then click OK.

Quit Registry Editor.

And that’s it…. nice!
