Bill Gates Shares Why We Should Upgrade to Vista

On CNN, Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates boasted that Vista, Microsoft’s widely anticipated new version of its Windows operating system, will make the personal computer the “place where it all comes together” for multimedia applications such as photos, music and videos.Gates’ comments were from an interview on CNN’s “American Morning,” which aired Tuesday to coincide with Vista’s release. (see the interview)

According to Gamespot.com the new Vista OS is packed with MS DirectX 10, a new graphics application programming process which claims to provide more realistic images–including rippling water, smoke, and lightning.

First-person shooter Crysis, developed by Crytek–the German team that also worked on Far Cry–will be one of the first games to use DirectX 10. Other titles include Flight Simulator X and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

Other gaming-related bonuses that Microsoft is touting include the built-in game explorer start menu feature, which brings together games and saved game data. It also allows parents to apply parental controls, choosing from a variety of games rating systems, including the ESRB, CERO, and PEGI.

Another feature of the new OS will be cross-platform functionality, meaning that gamers can use their Xbox 360 controllers with their PC to play Vista games, and play online games across PC and 360 platforms. Vista users will also be able to connect to Xbox Live.

There will also be a new logo for ‘Games for Windows’ on game packaging. To qualify, games must meet a set of guidelines–including easy install; compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller; Vista-compatibility; and support for widescreen resolution, multi-core, and multi-threading.

However, criticism for Vista’s gaming features has already emerged, with some concerns raised over how the tighter security controls will impact on independent game manufacturers who want to make a Vista game. Users who wish to download a game from the Internet will receive a series of warning pop-ups, and require an administrator’s password to do the installation. Some companies have expressed worries that this will put consumers off downloading casual games from their sites.

UK Game Charts: For Week ending January 27

Gamespot.com reports -”It was all change at the top of the UK all-formats chart for the week of January 20-27 as Lost Planet: Extreme Condition found its way back to number one. The previous week’s top achiever, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, slipped down to five, while football titles FIFA 07 and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 took second and third respectively.

Wii Play rose seven places to four, although the other Wii-exclusive title, WarioWare Smooth Moves, dropped to six. World Snooker Championship 2007 (World Pool Championship 2007 in the US) fell one place to seven, and Need for Speed Carbon did likewise, dropping to eight.

Another title that did well was animated movie tie-in Cars, which found its way back into the top 10 this week in ninth place. Call of Duty 3 rounded things off at 10, down two from last week.

There were no new entries inside the top 40 this week, but there are a handful of titles that should make some impact on next week’s list. These include strategy game Europa Universalis III, arcade classics bundle Sega Megadrive Collection (Sega Genesis Collection in the US), and Atari’s game version of the Arthur and the Invisibles film.”

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Cheats and more Cheats
There is an achievement that has confounded multiple IGN editors while playing Lost Planet. Since I earned it, I’ll save you some headache and explain how you defeat (but cannot kill) the Giant Worm.

The Worm (and you will know him when you meet him) can never be killed (only temporarily defeated). Know that right off the bat. He has big green glowing weak spots that you must shoot. Keep in mind, the Worm has two ends and sometimes shows the head (he charges forward when the head is up) and his ass (when he fires missiles out his bum). You need to do damage on both ends.

The most important thing is to keep running across the snow plains until you are away from the small flying creatures. Once you are away from them, it is just you and the worm. Aside from doing damage and being annoying, the littly flying bastards often get in the way of rocket launcher attacks. So get clear from them and then fight the Worm.

There is no special animation when the worm is beaten. The only way you will know is that the music stops. You don’t even have to have all his weak points destroyed to “defeat” him. However, in about two minutes, he returns completely healed. If the music has stopped, you have defeated the worm and you can stop fighting him.

When you defeat him you will not see an Achievement Unlock. Instead, you must complete the mission to get the achievement. This is why many at IGN spent significant time trying to defeat this beast again and again, not realizing the reward was already netted.

Gears of War Uniting the World

Gears of War cheat codes

First person shooter games have not done well in the Japanese market in the past. Main reason? Motion sickness. This genre of games have been known to cause nauseating affects on many gamers, and hence in some markets some games don’t do as well as it will in different market segments.

But Gears of War may have well just changed that mindset. Media Create sales data released today, has ranked Gears of War at number seven in this week’s Top 30 Japanese sales chart. In last week’s review in Famitsu, it awarded Gears of War a score of 37/40.

Epic games just may have something here… you think!??
